Foundation
This qualification provides a basic introduction
to the main styles of wines available
to front-line staff involved in the service of
wine. The qualification aims to provide the basic
product knowledge and skills in the service of wines. This qualification
is ideal for supervisors and staff who work in a drink section of your
business. You will also require this qualification prior to undertaking
the Intermediate WSET qualification.
Assessment
The course is run over 2 days, between the hours
of 11.00am & 5.00pm. There is a 30 question multiple choice test
at the end of the course. The exam paper is made up of 10 questions on
Wines by Style, 12 questions on Service of Wines and 8 questions on Food
and Wine Matching
To achieve a pass, candidates will also be required
to complete a portfolio of tasting notes. The
portfolio of tasting notes presented must cover
the minimum range of wine types.
Qualification Objectives
On completion of the core units, a candidate
will be able to:
- Describe in general terms the main styles of wines available
- Display
a basic understanding of the factors
that determine the main styles of wine
- Describe
in general terms the main characteristics
of the principal grape varieties
- Describe
the procedures for the storage and preparation
of wine for service
- Describe the procedures
for the bar and table service of wine
- Display
an understanding of the social responsibilities
of staff serving wine
- Produce simple
tasting notes
- Offer basic food and
wine matching advice
