Wines & Spirits Educational Trust (WSET) Intermediate
This qualification offers broad coverage of all product categories in
the field of alcoholic drinks, together with
the theory of tasting technique. This qualification is suitable for those
with little pervious experience. You need to successfully complete this
course prior to starting the WSET Advanced.
Assessment
The course is run over 8 days, between the hours
of 2.00pm & 5.00pm. There is a 50 question multiply choice test at
the end of the course. A candidate will be required to pass with a minimum
of 55%. The exam paper is made up of 4 questions on Factors influencing
styles, 12 questions on Grape varieties, 14 questions on Key wine producing
regions of the World, 3 on Sparkling wines, 3 on Sweet wines and fortified
wines, 4 on Spirits and Liqueurs, 4 on Information and advice for customers
and staff and 6 on describing the characteristics of the principal wines
of the world ( systematic approach to tasting).
To achieve a pass, candidates will also be required
to complete a portfolio of tasting notes. The
portfolio of tasting notes presented must cover
the minimum range of wine types.
Qualification Objectives
On completion of this qualification a candidate
will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the factors that influence
the main styles of wine
- Describe the characteristics
of the principal grape varieties
- Use
the key terms on a wine bottle label
to deduce the style and flavours of wines
made from principal grape varieties and
regions
- Apply principles of food and wine
matching to the key styles of wine available
- Use
a systematic approach to tasting to produce
descriptions of wines
- Provide information
on health issues relating to wines
- Provide
information and advice on the correct
storage and service of wines and spirits
